Bygrave serves up power in CQ Junior Masters Circuit

SOPHIE Bygrave was proud to finish second in the 15-and-under girls Central Queensland Junior Masters Circuit yesterday.

The 15-year-old won four out of her five matches, only losing to Tamie Chew from Rockhampton.

"She's just better. She's a great player," she said.

"She is very fast around the court."

Bygrave said her backhand needed some more work though.

"No, my backhand has not been great this weekend," she said.

"My serving has been pretty good.

"I've got a little bit of power over the other people."

In the doubles, Bygrave was paired with Briannah MacNab.

"We lost both of our matches but we still played pretty well," she said.

"I prefer singles because you don't let the other player down."

She said everyone was well behaved and there was no sign of Nick Kyrios-type behaviour on any of the courts over the two-day event.

There was some noise from the 17-and-under boys matches though, from Nathan Cooke who was getting frustrated with his touch despite leading against Lleyton Goldsmith from Maryborough.

The hometown player had the crowd on his side, making it hard for Goldsmith.

"They keep clapping when he wins a point even if it is for no reason. It's really hard," Goldsmith said.

Cooke went on to win the 17-and-under boys title with Goldsmith finishing second.

Twelve-year-old Jack Hickey had an up and down tournament but knew what he needed to work on.

"I've won some and lost some," he said.

"My balance has been bad. I keep leaning back when I am hitting my backhand.

"I end up hitting the ball short and the opponent comes in and hits a lot of winners."
