Any old shoe just won't do

BOOTS are a winter wardrobe staple. Before you step out in search of a new pair for winter, money-saving extraordinaire Melissa Goodwin, the founder of the website Frugal and Thriving, shares her tips.

When it comes to footwear, Ms Goodwin said the ultimate thing to look for is comfort.

To ensure your money is well spent, buy a quality shoe in an “evergreen'' fashion that goes with many outfits and look after your shoes so that they last more than one season.

Look for a pair of shoes in a classic fashion like basic black pumps or boots that can be worn with trousers, jeans or skirts. Also, consider your day-to-day activities when choosing a style. High heels, for instance, aren't a great style to choose if you do a lot of walking.

Buy a quality brand. Investing in a good pair of shoes will, if you look after them, save you next winter. A classic style won't go out of fashion.

Get the right fit. Your feet carry your whole body weight, they deserve comfortable, well-fitting shoes.

Once you know the shoes you want, wait for them to go on sale or hunt around for discounts.

If you want a dress shoe in the latest fashion that will not get worn next season, quality isn't as important. Buy cheaper brands.

Keep an eye out at the end of winter for next year's shoes at a bargain price.
