Brothers set benchmark as finals get closer

BROTHERS have put the writing on the wall and shown Valleys and Calliope the peak they will have to reach in order to steal the Gladstone Rugby League premiership from the minor premier.

The Brethren dispatched Valleys 38-10 on Sunday in impressive style, allowing only a pair of tries to Steve and Peter Gallen on the way to a big victory.

Brothers opened the scoring very early on in the match through Dan Wallace, who converted his own try.

Valleys responded in a manner just as quick as the first try, Steve Gallen crossing on the right-hand side of the field to make the score 6-4 after just seven minutes.

Peter Gallen then bagged himself a four-pointer, strolling over after a pair of dummies fooled the Brothers defenders and Valleys took the lead 10-6.

It would be the last time Valleys looked like they could win the match.

The tide turned when Trent Iselin picked up a loose ball in his own end and sprinted 85 metres to score.

It was the first of two tries Iselin scored in quick succession, after a good play down the right side led to Assan Munro throwing a fantastic ball back infield passed all the Valleys defenders to allow his halfback a free run to the line.

The winger Munro was then rewarded for his efforts, intercepting a pass and going 90 metres making it two long-range tries in the first half to Brothers and extending the lead to 22-10.

Lachlan Tanzer had his name on the score sheet in the first half as well, crossing behind the posts to give Brothers a 28-10 half-time lead.

The Brethren then played smart rugby league for most of the second half, completing a lot of sets and keeping Valleys subdued in attack.

Valleys had a few opportunities but were never able to make another impact on the score board.

Damien Hill and David Rota each scored second-half tries to help Brothers to the healthy win.

"It was probably our best performance all year," Brothers coach Steve Southern said.

"Our defence was great. It didn't let them play footy."

Valleys will now play Calliope for the chance to face off against Brothers in the grand final on August 31.
