Boom or bust job prospects: welcome to our port city
WELCOME to Gladstone, the city where it's boom or bust when it comes to finding a job.
For the past couple of years people with construction skills have had little problem finding work.
But in recent times it has been almost impossible for people with few skills to find employment.
The Observer has heard of instances where more than 100 applications have been received for one job.
But that's about to change.
Our city is about to see the creation of about 350 positions in the hospitality industry as a number of new eating places prepare to open their doors.
More people will have an opportunity to make their own way in life.
It seems Gladstone has seldom been a place where there is employment stability - it has been everything or nothing - and it has been the same in other areas, such as housing, where, in 2011 and 2012, there was a massive shortage of accommodation followed by the current oversupply.
Stability is what we all hope for, but it's probably best not to hold your breath.
