BITS Saints ready after long pre-season
AFL: After enduring an almost four-month pre-season, Boyne Island Tannum Sands Saints coach Alan Watkin says his troops are chomping at the bit to begin the 2017 AFL Capricornia season.
BITS Saints have been training since early January with all that hard work about to come to fruition Saturday afternoon at BITS Oval at 3:20pm.
The Saints have a Round One match-up against Rockhampton Brothers Kangaroos and although frustrated at the lengthy delay to begin the season, Watkin fancies the Saints' chances at Boyne Island.
"We're confident we can kick the season off with a win,” Watkin said.
"We don't know exactly what we are up against but that's pretty standard.
"I think we'll have their measure because we've had a long pre-season.
"We've been training since the first week of January... it's the longest pre-season I've ever been involved in.”
With the regular season not due to wrap up until the second weekend of August, Watkin still has an eye on September glory.
"Our eye is on the big prize and there's no reason why we can't be totally successful by the end of the year,” he said.
"Being competitive week to week is the primary objective but the main goal is to actually win the premiership.”
Watkin says last year's premiers, Yeppoon Swans definitely remain the team to beat in 2017.
"The reports are that they've maintained and picked up a couple of players like we have,” he said.
"That will bolster our side but they are certainty the benchmark and that's what we are looking to measure ourselves against.”
