Big new shopping centre proposed for Kirkwood
A MASSIVE commercial shopping centre precinct that could attract retailers such as Super Amart and JB Hifi has been proposed for Kirkwood.
Walker Group has applied to Gladstone Regional Council to rezone 15.2 ha of residential land along Kirkwood Rd, opposite the existing Kirkwood Woolworths.
The new commercial centre would be bulky goods only rather than small specialty stores, and therefore wouldn't be competing with Stockland.
That means Walker is looking to attract large retailers such as a garden centre, large scale hardware, service station or a furniture store.
Walker's general manager Peter Saba said the centre could even include indoor entertainment for the kids such as an indoor go-kart track.
The land is already owned by Walker Group, which had planned to release residential lots over 21 stages.
But the downturn in the property market and demand for another bulky goods precinct has changed their mind.
As part of the new draft planning scheme, Gladstone Regional Council outlined key areas ideal for a new commercial precinct.
That included the land at Kirkwood.
"There's definitely a demand for a precinct like this," Mr Saba said.
"We've spent a lot of time in Rockhampton and Bundaberg and we think there is a real opportunity to stop what we call escape expenditure."
A Foresight study commissioned by Gladstone Regional Council showed that in 2011 an estimated $111 million in retail and food was spent outside the region.
That's money residents are spending in other towns because of a gap in Gladstone's own retail sector.
Walker group has put together a list of retailers in Rockhampton and Bundaberg with no presence in Gladstone.
That list includes retailers such as Freedom Furniture, Choice Flooring, Super Amart, Jaycar, The Good Guys and JB Hifi.
