Anzac Test: best on ground to win new Anzac medal

A NEW medal featuring a New Zealand soldier killed at Gallipoli 100 years ago will be presented to the best player on the ground in tomorrow night's Anzac Test between Australia and New Zealand in Brisbane.

The Charles Savory Medal (pictured) will carry extra significance in the centenary year of Gallipoli.

ARL Commission chairman John Grant unveiled the medal at an ANZAC Test lunch in Brisbane yesterday, attended by members of both teams, and also players from the Jillaroos as well as the NZ Kiwi Ferns which will play a curtain-raiser.

"Charles Savory played for his country, then served his country, and made the ultimate sacrifice for his country," Grant told a captivated audience. "He is a fitting choice for this honour."

Savory also won a national heavyweight boxing title, and played for the Australasian team against Great Britain on the 2011-12 tour.
