From hippie to hipster on foodie trail

THE Sunshine Coast hinterland hamlet of Maleny has long been recognised as hippies' heaven, but look a little closer and you'll find it's also foodies' paradise.

SHOTGUN ESPRESSO

Sip a Campos Coffee and watch the passing parade from a footpath table or grab a freshly baked scone and settle in the sunny courtyard with shade sails to diffuse the sun and crocheted lap rugs to stave off the chill. A wholesome breakfast menu runs until 2pm with free-range eggs, organic oats, house made condiments, local honey and seasonal produce. A rotating selection of pies, toasties and salads - all made on site - fill the front cabinet.

MALENY CHEESE

If you time your visit right, you can see this boutique cheese and yoghurt factory in action. Watch from a glass viewing platform as cow and buffalo milk mozzarella is made, sample a range of infused cheddars and fetas and take home a tub of the dreamy, creamy apple and cinnamon yoghurt. The menu at the onsite Maleny Cheese Cafe runs from raclette and fondue to open grilled sandwiches and cheesy tarts.

MALENY LANE

Part market, part pop-up food court, this collection of eateries springs to life from Friday to Sunday, serving global cuisine to customers in an open communal dining space. Grab a caffeine hit from Coffee Shack or Sherpa Kitchen, treat yourself to gluten-free doughnuts or French crepes or chow down on German sausages, Indian curry, Japanese gyoza, Greek souvlaki or Maleny pies. Saturday night markets are held monthly.

THE TAMARIND

This modern Asian fine-diner welcomes all guests, whether they're staying at Spicers Tamarind Retreat or not. Select Thai-inspired dishes from chef Dan Jarrett's menu or delegate the decision to his five-course chef's selection with matching wines. Feast on koji-marinated beef tataki, charred octopus with miso and eggplant puree or Cambodian style barramundi. The Tamarind also packs gourmet picnic hampers for guests and day trippers.

MALENY FOOD CO

If the shelves of local and international cheese lining the street-facing display window doesn't entice you, the variety of gelato scooped at Maleny Food Co will stop you in your tracks. Try the Cherry Ripe, you won't be disappointed. The store formerly known as Colin James Fine Food supplements its fromagerie and gelataria with a gourmet deli and cafe serving Walker Farm cage-free eggs, grass-fed, free-range meat from Maple Street meats and Essential Grain Bakery organic sourdough.
