BEHIND THE SCENES: The making of a catchy headline

Some stories more than others lend themselves to a catchy headline.

It might be a pun that's going begging, a touch of alliteration or the chance to bust out a rhyme.

Going the extra effort we think adds great value to our stories and so too do our readers.

So, when stories like this come along, we like to make the most of them.

It isn't to take away from the story content, but even the most serious yarn needs a good headline; and sometimes those are the ones that give us the best chance to get creative.

An Email-All email goes out, giving the team of reporters and sub-editors about half an hour or so to submit their best headline entries.

More often than not, these wonderful and often whacky lists are compiled, one is selected, and the email is deleted and the headlines lost.

Well, I couldn't let this lot go to waste.

Below are the headlines that were sent in last night, for a court story by reporter Ross Irby (who is no amateur when it comes to writing a catchy headline himself) about a fight over a hen that rocked a neighbourhood.
