Volunteers needed as entertainment precinct flourishes
ALMOST 20 years ago, Friends of the Theatre began at the Gladstone City Theatre.
Inaugural members Bev Fellows and Gloria Holmes have witnessed the city grow from strength to strength and the crowds regaled by a broad spectrum of entertainers.
As the entertainment precinct in Gladstone flourishes, so too does the need for volunteers.
Secretary Peter Miller is seeking volunteers to assist in ushering crowds at the newly opened Gladstone Entertainment and Convention Centre.
"With the new GECC we have the possibility for the first time to have two shows running consecutively," he said.
"It's these double-headers that are meaning we need more volunteers."
The 70-odd current volunteers emerge from all walks of life, and have been granted their own Friends Room at the new GECC with coffee and tea facilities.
"It's an excellent way to meet new people if you have just moved to town," said Mr Miller. It's an excellent opportunity to get out of the house and a fun way to give back to your community."
Members of the Friends of the Theatre were happy to impart their requests for what to bring to the GECC next.
"More stage and comedy shows would be good," said Jodie Black, who volunteers along with daughter Alexis and son Robert.
"Kevin Bloody Wilson and George Smilovici were great when they came to town."
Social events are occasionally held for volunteers such as harbour cruises and barbecues.
