THE battle for a public swimming pool at Boyne Island or Tannum Sands has reignited with more than 1000 people signing a petition presented to Gladstone Regional Council.

The petition calls for a swimming pool to be provided for Tannum Sands and Boyne Island residents, who have not had a public pool since one at Tannum Sands State School closed to the general public 10 years ago.

Organiser Justine Hartley said on Tuesday that she started the petition on Facebook a month ago and in two days it had 200 signatures.

"I've got 1000 signatures now, and there's more to collect but I don't have enough time," said Ms Hartley, who was rushing to collate the petition before Tuesday's council meeting.

"We have a beach but if the tide's out there's nowhere to swim," she said.

"It's 20 minutes to Gladstone which is just too far when it's a hot day."

Ms Hartley, a mother of two, said the community didn't understand why the pool was closed to the public, and was demanding answers.

"We did have a swimming pool at the state school but it got taken off us," she said.

"The community is frustrated; there's no reason why we don't have one anymore."

Mayor Gail Sellers received the petition on behalf of the council but said council support for a new pool was unlikely.

"I don't know that Gladstone Regional Council is looking for another pool," she said.

"It's not so much about getting money to build it; it's more about the ongoing maintenance and staffing of it, so it's a big ask for us."

Cr Maxine Brushe was not surprised the issue had again resurfaced.

"It's been an issue for about 10 years now, perhaps 15," she said.

"I would love to see Boyne Tannum have a swimming pool that was open to the public."
