Power basketball sides come away with no wins

IT WAS A TOUGH weekend for both of McDonalds Gladstone Port City Power men and women basketball teams on the weekend.

Cairns inflicted a double dose of misery with respective 76-56 and 87-67 wins in the women and men matches last night.

The Cairns' women streaked away to a 20-10 first quarter and from that point, it was just a case of catch-up basketball for the visitors.

Power captain Maddy Willey, Markel Walker and Hailey Salaivalu-Moala all shot 13 points while Cairns Teyla Evans shot a game-high 20 points.

Cairns had four players who posted double-digit scores to dismantle Gladstone's men's side.

Jake and Tyler Allen were outstanding with 27 and 18 points for the Power.

Anthony Fisher (19 points) and Damon Heiur shot 18 for Cairns.

The Power women also went down to a powerful Townsville side in Townsville on Friday night.

Despite 27 points from imports Kerah Nelson and Walker (23 points), the hosts built a 47-35 lead at half-time lead.

From there Townsville never relinquished its intensity to ease out a 91-73 win.

Willey was held to 13 points while Townsville's Natalie Novosel dominated with 25 points.

Gladstone's men only lost by five points after it mounted a stirring fightback in the final quarter.

Down by eight points at three quarter time, the visitors pushed Townsville in the final term, but despite the best efforts of Marvin Williams (27 points) and Jake Allen (17) - Townsville kept its noses in front to win 101-96.

Peter Crawford and Luke Schenscher combined for 46 points for Townsville.
