Backline options for Capras but Smith misses out

RUGBY LEAGUE: Fresh from a bye courtesy of the representative weekend, the CQ Capras are confident of springing an upset over the erratic Ipswich Jets at Browne Park on Saturday night.

Coach Kim Williams has named Calliope's Bill Cullen on the bench for the clash against the eighth-placed Jets, with Gladstone Valleys' junior Sam Smith left out again.

While Smith could still suit up for the Capras, Williams has acknowledged that a bevy of backline options is a good thing for his side.

"I don't think we have played the same 17 every week yet,” Williams said.

"The outside backs are in contention every week, Junior Kirisome is a quality player who played every game for us last year, Chanel (Seigafo) had his nose in front before he got suspended.

"The forward pack is similar, we have a large squad and plenty of local players putting the pressure on, it is a good position for me to be in.”

Smith can consider himself unlucky not to gain selection due to his two-try, four-goal performance during Valleys' 54-6 defeat of Tannum Sands last weekend, with coach Shaun Hobson stating that the 198cm centre was clearly a class above the pack in the clash at Marley Brown Oval.

However, injury troubles have hindered Smith in recent weeks which has cruelled his chances of adding to his three Intrust Super Cup appearance so far this season.

"He started our first three games of the year and was good without being outstanding,” Williams said.

"He has had a knee which is still struggling him a little bit and he played at the 47th battalion and got through that okay.

"He definitely is not 100%, he was hobbling around in training last night, so that is working against him at the moment.

"He is a player I would pick with confidence and another guy who is certainly putting pressure on the starters.”

The 12th-placed Capras have only scrapped up three wins this season from nine games, while the Jets have won four and dropped five.

"We see this as an extremely important game for the season and all the players look mentally up for it,” Williams said.
