Archers on target for Awoonga weekend shoot

ARCHERY: The Gladstone Field Archers will host a 3DAAA Sanctioned Shoot this weekend at Awoonga Dam to target national standing.

Club secretary Steve Wyatt said the annual sanctioned shoot would showcase some of the best archers in the country.

"We can expect around 60-80 competitors this weekend and will have archers from Brisbane area, Toowoomba and potentially New South Wales," Wyatt said.

"The national body runs these events in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria and some competitors will travel to most of meets."

The archers will be lining up to shoot 3D targets at different ranges with a variety of bows.

"There are different age groups for the archers, from Cubs, Juniors, Adults and Seniors, and they will use Longbows, Compounds and Recurve Bows," Wyatt said.

"Once a year we host this sanctioned event and it goes towards the national title."

The level of competition will be of a high standard with competitors on target and aiming to score more points.

"The Gladstone archers usually hold their own ... the main goal of the weekend is to have some fun and enjoy ourselves," Wyatt said.

"There is a group of elite archers who travel around consistently to these meets and will provide some real competition.

"We have some good ones in the groups and should win a few prizes for us."
