Alleged sexual assualt offender charged

GLADSTONE detectives have charged a Cairns man in relation to an alleged sexual assault in the city last Wednesday night.

Detectives travelled to Cairns on the weekend and on Sunday charged the 23-year-old man with one count of rape and one count of robbery with actual violence.

The offences allegedly occurred sometime between 9.30pm Wednesday and 1am Thursday, while the man was visiting Gladstone.

A 19-year-old woman called police after allegedly waking up in a vacant lot in the early hours of Thursday morning with limited memory of the previous three and a half hours.

She had been at a Gladstone nightclub before the alleged incident and police initially believed her drink may have been spiked before she was sexually assaulted and left in the allotment near the club.

The man was ordered to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on June 27.

Last week's alleged assault followed a similar incident on April 22 where a woman was believed to have been sexually assaulted on Auckland Point in the early hours of the morning.

She was seen in a distressed state at a city nightclub after the alleged incident.
