Discussion with Main Roads delays second bridge
ANOTHER bridge linking Tannum Sands and Boyne Island could cost $60 million, Gladstone Regional Council has warned, and said contributions from a developer calling for the infrastructure would not cover the cost of the link.
This week The Sands developer Lyons Residential said a fast-track for the bridge would allow the developer to prioritise a retirement village, swimming pool, and childcare centre.
Residential development manager Oliver Kent said the council had failed to begin $5 million of investigation and design works on what was an extension of Pioneer Dr.
But the council CEO Stuart Randle said the discussions with Main Roads had created the delay.
"The extension will logically become part of the Main Roads network at some time in the future," he said.
"It was important for us to consult with Transport and Main Roads at the earliest possible stage, (and) these discussions took some time to finalise."
The Sands investor is speaking at the GAPDL Business Enterprise Luncheon today, to call for government action on the bridge.
