Anne takes a step at a time to achieve degree

AS the saying goes, just take it one step at a time.

CQUniversity has a specialised program for those wanting to do exactly that.

CQUniversity Australia's Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) is a free, Centrelink-approved  program that helps students get the necessary skills, knowledge and confidence to start a degree.

At Gladstone Marina campus on Wednesday, CQUniversity will host a STEPS information session to help students take the first step towards their dreams.

At CQUniversity's Gladstone graduation last month, former bridging student Anne Inglis took centre stage, winning the Associate Vice- Chancellor's Campus Award for her achievements while studying a Bachelor of Learning Management.

The mum-of-two attended the ceremony with her family, and is now teaching maths and science at Tannum Sands State High School.

She started her study with CQUniversity's bridging program in 2010, with an academic writing course and a study skills course.

"The study skills course was an eye-opener - you realised how much time you can waste!" she laughed.

"It made me very conscious of managing my time, and planning study around work and running a household."

Previously an admin assistant in a finance broker's office, Mrs Inglis initially juggled part-time work with her study, before becoming a casual teacher aide.

"I never expected to do so well when I went into the degree, but my first assignment was a high distinction.

"I was shocked, but the discipline and dedication that I'd learnt was really crucial.

"I'd gone to uni when I first finished high school, but I never finished my accounting degree - I didn't have the self-discipline and wasn't prepared for such a huge commitment, so it was great to have the opportunity."

The information session will be held in the the Martin Hanson Building, Room 1.10, Gladstone Marina campus at 9am on Wednesday.
