Aboriginal group slams refusal over Facing Island

AN ABORIGINAL leader has slammed the State Government, following the refusal of an indigenous land transfer on Facing Island.

Department of Natural Resources and Mines regional director Darren Moor ruled the Gatcombe Head land should be a community reserve, after locals objected to the land transfer.

But Gurang spokeswoman Cherissma Blackman said local Aboriginal people felt "ripped off, discriminated against and disenfranchised" by the claim process.

"This is very disappointing and demonstrates the State Aboriginal Land Act or Native Title Act does not protect the rights and interests of those affected by it," she said.

She said she would seek legal advice on the decision.
