Tony Abbott set to cash in as speaker

FORMER prime minister Tony Abbott has officially joined the ranks of former world leaders on the lucrative lecture circuit.

An update to Mr Abbott's Members' Interest declarations released yesterday showed the Member for Warringah has been recruited by prestigious speaking agency, Washington Speakers' Bureau.

Mr Abbott wrote that "from time to time I will receive honorariums from speaking engagements overseas" and his attendance at such events "will sometimes be arranged" by the firm.

The Arlington, Virginia-based company includes on its speakers' list leaders including former British prime minister Tony Blair and former United States attorney-general Eric Holder.

Its website promoted Mr Abbott as one of its "new exclusives", touting him as offering "profound depth of experience" and "unparalleled insights" on leadership, global trade and the economy and terrorism.

The firm charges "honorariums" from $15,000 to more than $40,000 for the highest-profile speakers to appear at corporate events.

Mr Abbott did not respond to questions yesterday.
