Radio station to hold open day with relaunch as Fresh FM
THOUSANDS of people listen a month, but not many people have heard of 91.9 Fresh FM.
When Vicki Buchanan started volunteering in administration roles at the Christian radio station in 1999, she didn't think she'd end up working as the general manager almost two decades later.
"I'm heavily involved with the operations of the station," Vicki said.
Today Vicki is driving the radio station in a new direction while dodging the negative connotations associated with being a religious broadcaster.
Shaking the former Rhema FM branding, Vicki and her team of 20 are relaunching the station as Fresh FM with an open day on Sunday, June 16.
But Christianity doesn't have to be a dirty word in Gladstone.
"We like to stay positive. There's no smut on our airwaves. It's the station you can listen to with kids in the car," Vicki said.
McNair Ingenuity Research found 91.9fm to have 15% of the region's listenership, with more than 6000 people tuning into the station a month.
Fresh Fm's flagship program Focus on the Family is one the most popular shows.
Based on the US show of the same name, the show focuses on issues surrounding marriage, parenting and bringing up teenagers.
Now that the crew are broadcasting from their fancy new digs on Uniting Dr, Telina, Vicki is hoping to introduce new elements to the stations' on-air shows.
"We don't do a great deal of talkback...but would love to in the future," Vicki said.
"As we develop the station we will be developing talkback."
"We are also looking at getting a great breakfast show up," she said.
"Weather and local news are also on our wish list."
On Sunday Vicki and the crew will host an open day at the station for the community and their 150 members.
The shenanigans will kick off at 9am with a sausage sizzle at 11.30am.
