$959,000 worth of personalised plates in Gladstone

YOU'D be hard pressed to find someone better qualified to comment on the number of personalised plates in Gladstone than Wayne "Jamesy" James.

The Gladstone local has just returned from a 14-month trip around Australia with his young family.

"I reckon that Gladstone has the highest number of personalised plates in Australia per capita," Mr James said.

With a set of plates himself on his 200 Series Land Cruiser, Mr James said he loved having a bit of personality on the family vehicle.

"I like my plates. If I had the money I'd buy more," he said. "We want to get the kids' names on plates too and give them to them for their 18th birthdays."

In a quirky set of circumstances, Jamesy, as Mr James has always been known, said their personalised plates had even landed them in a minor brush with the law during their travels.

"It's a funny story," he laughed.

"Over in WA I was pulled over by the cops. They said there's a stolen LandCruiser with the plates 'JAMESY' on it.

"I said it wasn't me. They had their hands on their guns and everything so I was a bit worried, but they were after a LandCruiser with Western Australian plates on it and mine are Queensland, so it was all good."

He said that being locals, him and his wife enjoyed the fact that friends could easily identify them around town with the recognisable JAMESY plate out and about on the roads.
