90 years young and still busy
VOLUNTEERING is what keeps Liz Aitken young. Celebrating her 90th birthday last week, she said she loves sharing her local knowledge with visitors during her weekly stints at The Agnes Water Visitor Information Centre.
“I only do half a day on Friday – I am 90 after all,” she said.
Having lived in Agnes Water for close to 17 years, Ms Aitken has been an ambassador for the region for the past five years.
“You get so proud of your own corner of the world,” she said.
Ms Aitken said she loved being able to help visitors and despite her extensive knowledge of the region still got nervous she may not be able to answer questions.
“A lady came in and she said my husband has a question and I thought ‘oh god I hope I can answer it!’ You go into a cold sweat if they ask you something you don’t know.”
Ms Aitken said she loved meeting all the visitors that come through and that most of them were lovely.
“When we had finished helping one group he said ‘you are the nicest ambassadors of your country I’ve ever met’. It makes you feel good when you get feedback like that.”
