2009 Ferrari 430 Scuderia Spider 16M a tribute to racing
THIS week's blog is on an extremely rare 2009 Ferrari 430 Scuderia Spider 16M.
As the name suggests, this is basically just a 430 Scuderia without the hardtop. Instead, it has a folding cloth roof which when folded down sits just in front of the engine in a separate compartment.
When it was first launched, it was the fastest open top Ferrari, ever.
It is powered by the same engine that is in an ordinary 430 Scuderia, which is a 4.3-litre, 32 valve eight-cylinder engine that can produce up to 375 kilowatts (503 horsepower) at 8500rpm and 470 Newton metres of torque (347 pound-feet of torque) at 5250rpm.
It also features the same six-speed F1-Superfast2 automated-manual transmission as the Scuderia, which in Race mode can shift within 60 milliseconds.
It also has a dry weight of just 1340 kilograms, which is about 80 kilograms lighter than a standard F430 Spider.
hey achieved this weight saving by stripping the interior of all necessities, even the carpets.
There is also lightweight cloth inserts on the carbon fibre seats, full carbon fibre doors, and it has most of the sound deadening removed, too.
Some other weight reducing features are the updated front and rear bumpers which increase down force and aerodynamic efficiency, a major overhaul of the double-wishbone suspension, new dampers and a new steering box.
They went so crazy with the weight saving that they even made the wheel bolts from titanium.
All of this works together to achieve a 0-100 kilometre per hour acceleration time of just 3.7 seconds, and the 16M will keep accelerating until it reaches its top speed of 315 kilometres per hour (196 miles per hour).
Some other features that this particular Ferrari is equipped with includes 19-inch, five-spoke gold alloy wheels wrapped in performance tires, a front and rear stabilizer bar, four-wheel ABS as well as traction and stability control, xenon headlights, electronic brake force distribution, a leather optioned interior, and much more.
Out of the 499 Ferrari 430 Scuderia Spider 16M's produced, only 12 of them made it to Australian shores. If one went on the market today, you could expect it to be priced from $400,000-$500,000 AUD plus on-road costs.
