Library Square fix to cost $20,000
THE $90,000 water fountain in Library Square doesn't work but now the council has set aside a further $20,000 to redesign the space.
The fountain was designed, constructed and installed in June 2007 by two Gold Coast-based companies.
But less than a decade later, work is underway to replace the $91,106 fountain because it is no longer functional and, the mayor says, it is too expensive to fix.
Constant blockages from leaf litter and dust have plagued the fountain since it was installed and the reservoir leaks.
And because of the design of the fountain, the leaks were putting water "in close proximity" to power cables, which was a "hazard" to maintenance staff.
Mayor Gail Sellers said the council had not considered fixing the fountain because of the "considerable" cost in digging up the infrastructure.
"…the main problem lies with the design of the current structure and location," Cr Sellers said.
"Therefore it was considered a better option to undertake a redesign of the area."
Gladstone Youth Council has just been consulted about the area redesign and while options are still being investigated, nothing has been finalised yet.
