Gladstone woman reunited with 14yo message from her girlhood

CONSERVATION Volunteers expected to find frisbees, tennis balls and rubbish during their Wild Cattle Beach clean up this week, but they found something far better.

A volunteer picked up a message in a 14 year old message in a bottle.

Posts on social media by member Damien Burridge then allowed the group to find the original writer, now 25 year old Leah Zimmerlie.

The message was written by 10 year old Leah who lived at Barney Point.

Ms Jones said it was an eventful clean up, with the group picking up more than 50kg of rubbish.

"We had Dr Scott Wilson with us and he said lets go and do this project all together," Ms Jones said.

"It's pretty special that we have been able to connect back with her and let her know it was found," she said.

This morning's post liked hundreds of times with many friends tagging the original writer.

"We had quite a large amount to clean up on that day, it really is an ongoing thing and we're hoping one day we'll see less debris.

"It's much nicer to find a message in a bottle than rubbish," she said.
