UPDATE: Bid to get 1000ft slip 'n' slide in council's hands
UPDATE 5PM: The Gladstone Regional Council holds the ultimate power when it comes to bringing a 1000ft long slip 'n' slide to the CBD.
The Gladstone PCYC has applied to close off Goondoon St from Yarroon St to the Yacht Club for the ultimate adrenalin rush event on September 13.
In what will be a first for Gladstone, excitement for the event is already gaining momentum.
But Gladstone PCYC manager Mick Newell says it is still early days.
The application for the road closure is with Gladstone Regional Council and is being processed.
The idea was pitched to the Gladstone PCYC committee by residents.
And the committee was instantly enthralled.
"Over the past the PCYC has had rigid fundraising ideas, we're prepared to look at things outside the square and events that haven't happened in Gladstone before," he said.
"We all thought, wow that looks like fun."
The PCYC relies heavily on hosting events to fund their youth programs.
Already the Gladstone PCYC has more than 10 programs in place for youth.
Sgt Newell said if this was to go ahead, it would help fund their courses such as the youth awareness and crime prevention programs.
Earlier this year their Rainbow Run raised more than $10,000.
It was the first time for an event of its kind for Gladstone.
"That was great, (because of that funding) we could get more kids come to us from schools and they get to work in a team environment and improve their self esteem," he said.
Their next fundraiser is the PCYC Charity Ball and on July 11.
11AM: A 1000ft slip and slide could be coming to Gladstone if the PCYC's application to Gladstone Regional Council for a fundraising event is approved.
Earlier today the Gladstone PCYC announced on its Facebook page that it had lodged an application to close Goondoon St from Yaroon St to the Yacht Club for the mammoth slip 'n' slide.
The slide would be part of a fundraising event in September.
Slide the City events are held around the world.
The announcement follows a very successful fundraiser earlier in the year, the Rainbow Run, which raised more than $10,000.
